What is a Septic System?

A septic system is like a mini underground sewage treatment facility on your property. The plumbing that leads from all of your household toilets, kitchen sink, bathroom sinks and drains, (including your washing machine, dishwasher, and garbage disposal) connects to a main waste line that leads to your septic tank. In most cases, a septic system typically consists of a septic tank, piping and a drain field for the absorption of wastes.

How does a septic tank work?

The septic tank is a watertight container consisting of three layers. The top "scum" layer is composed of lighter materials that float on water such as grease, fats and oil. The middle “liquid” layer consists of liquid and suspended solids. The bottom “sludge” layer consists of much of the solid debris portion of the sewage waste. Typically, only the liquid layer is released from the septic tank into the drainfield.

There exists in the septic tank naturally occurring beneficial bacteria which help breakdown and degrade the materials found in the scum and sludge layers so that it becomes part of the liquid layer that is released into the drainfield. Under proper conditions, further decomposition of the liquids and suspended solids will occur in the soil. Despite this natural degradation, solids will continue to build up at the bottom sludge layer of the septic tank so that your tank must be pumped out periodically. Unfortunately due to a number of factors, many things can and do go wrong with septic system function, which can lead to costly back-up and repair.

When a septic tank is properly maintained, a balance occurs between the layers, resulting in the presence of beneficial bacteria growing in the system. What is put into the septic tank

Adverse effect to a septic tank can happen when home owners inadvertently overuse or add harmful substances to their system. These include household chemical cleaners, bleach, anti-bacterial soap, and caustic drain openers. You should never pour cooking grease, oil or grease down your drains. You should also never pour oil-based paints, paint thinners or solvents, down the drain. Avoid gasoline, pesticides, motor oil and antifreeze. Limit the use of a garbage disposal to significantly reduce the amount of fats, greases oils and grinds that can cause clogs. Don’t flush as trash, wipes, feminine hygiene products, floss, diapers, cigarette butts, paper towels and pharmaceuticals. All tthese items can distort the biological balance in your septic system and can kill off these beneficial bacteria that populate your septic tank leading to possible septic back-up and failure. Pouring the wrong items into your septic tank or overuse can also increase how often you need to have your system pumped by a Septic professional.

The amount of water entering the tank

In addition, excessive amounts and/or heavy flow of water entering the septic tend to make the tank fill up more quickly and will flush out a great portion of the beneficial bacteria growing in your septic tank. If this occurs, the sewage can build up more quickly which can cause clogging and back-up. Try to limit your water use by using water efficient appliances, take shorter showers, use full loads in your washing machine or dishwasher, and by fixing any plumbing leaks.

Maintain your septic system

Correct septic system maintenance involves making sure there is a proper balance of beneficial bacteria in your septic tank. Pumping is a necessary part of proper septic system maintenance. Even if properly maintained, sludge will continue to build up at the bottom of the tank so that the septic tank needs to be pumped out periodically. If it's not pumped out, sludge will accumulate until it overflows. The EPA states that the average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years and typically pumped every three to five years, with certain alternate systems inspected once a year. The EPA also identifies four major factors that influence the frequency of septic pumping: household size, total wastewater generated, volume of solids in wastewater, and septic tank size. An improperly maintained, neglected, or misused septic tank will need to be pumped more often than one that has been properly maintained. You also need to consult your local health department for their recommended or required pumping schedules.
